Showing up online is simply a part of owning a creative business. People want to see your artwork, but they also want to see you and get to know the person behind the art. Being on camera is the way to connect with your audience and develop that solid, trusting relationship. The more steps you take to feel confident in front of the camera, the easier it will be. In order to show up for your audience and grow your business, you’ll need to share your personality and knowledge with the world.
Spruce Yourself Up
You do not need to put on your fanciest outfit or a full face of makeup to go live on Facebook, but sprucing yourself up a bit can go a long way in boosting your confidence. When you look good, you feel good! However, don’t let looking “camera ready” stop you from showing up online for your audience. Show up exactly how you are – you are amazing and your audience will love getting to know you, no matter what.
Pre-Camera Ritual
If you’re feeling nervous before getting in front of the camera, have some kind of pre-camera ritual or routine in place that will calm you down. Put on your favorite playlist and have a little dance party, drink a cup of calming tea, or do a quick meditation to ground yourself in the moment. Whatever gives your confidence a boost, do that thing right before you’re ready to go on camera.
Practice Makes Perfect
Talk to yourself all the time – in the car, in the shower, while you’re cleaning the house, or literally wherever and whenever you want. The more you hear your voice talking in an uninterrupted manner, the more natural it will be to talk to a camera. The next time you do an art piece or create something, narrate the steps you are taking, just like you would do if you were teaching it to your audience.
Getting comfortable in front of the camera is a journey. It doesn’t always feel natural to talk to a camera, knowing lots of people around the world are watching you. However, it’s so important to shake out those jitters and just do it. Remember, people buy from people, and your audience is waiting to get to know you personally, see your face, and hear your voice.
