As entrepreneurs, it’s easy to fall into the Shiny Object Syndrome trap. We tend to be highly motivated, we are attracted to new goals and developments, and we aren’t afraid to start new projects. These are all great qualities when you own a business, but it can be a downfall when you start chasing new project after new project and never settle on one option. You could end up with a long list of projects you have started and abandoned, never accomplishing anything. Thankfully, there are several ways you can combat Shiny Object Syndrome so that you stay on track and meet your goals.
Sleep On It
Before you start working on a new project that you just know is the “best idea ever”, take time to really think about it. Sleep on it. Make sure it aligns with your goals and your business. Do some more research and talk about it with a trusted friend, mentor, or business partner. Not every single idea you have should be acted on, and giving yourself this time period to think on it can stop you from making a hasty decision.
Overly Communicate Your Goals
Set your goals and talk about them often. Have them front and center for you, so that every business decision you are making, and every project you are considering, aligns with those goals. Not only does this hold you accountable to yourself and to others, but it reminds you of your game plan. When something pops up, you are easily able to determine if it makes sense for the path you are taking with your business.
Abandon Projects Only When Necessary
Abandoning a project or goal shouldn’t be something that you do regularly. If a project is costing you far more than you anticipated or if things have changed for you so much that your new venture doesn’t make sense, it’s okay to abandon a project. However, you shouldn’t abandon a new idea simply because you got distracted, bored, or gave up. See your ideas through once you’ve started them.
If you really want to avoid switching gears constantly or just feeling like your business is all over the place, it’s a good idea to use of these tips to combat Shiny Object Syndrome. This is something that all business owners experience – new ideas and projects are fun and exciting after all. However, sticking to your main business goals and aligning your decisions with those goals is what will help you succeed.
