Lead magnets are powerful tools that you can use to easily grow your email list and your audience. The idea is that you provide something of value (a workshop, PDF tutorial, ebook, etc.) and your audience provides you with their email address. The right lead magnet can really boost your list and help you scale your business, but there are several simple mistakes you can make when putting it together too. Here are the biggest lead magnet mistakes to avoid so that you can build an excited, engaged audience.

Too Much Information

While we want to deliver value to our audience, we don’t want to give all of our secrets away for free. You don’t want your audience to just join your list – you want them to join your list AND take action with your freebie for a quick win. A workshop is a great lead magnet because it shows you in action, provides value, and is a quick win for your audience. Avoid a super long PDF tutorial or an ebook with all of your techniques. Just focus on one, simple topic!

Targets the Wrong Audience

If your lead magnet doesn’t appeal to your target audience, you might wind up with a mailing list full of people who are wrong for your membership or product. This could lead to lots of unsubscribes and a low open rate. Think about your ideal client and what they are looking for, what they might find useful, and what will lead them to purchase from you in the future. Creating a lead magnet is starting your customer on a buying journey.

Missing a Nurture Sequence

If you don’t have a follow-up email nurture sequence, you are really missing out on the perfect opportunity to build some trust and authority with your new subscribers. Choose an email marketing platform (like ConvertKit, Active Campaign, FloDesk, or Mail Chimp) and create an automated email sequence. This sequence is triggered after someone downloads your lead magnet, and they will receive scheduled follow-up emails from you.

Creating a lead magnet is one of the best ways to attract new leads, bring value and trust to your audience, and build your mailing list. It does require some deep thinking – what is your target audience looking to learn? What will they care about? It also requires some follow-up – don’t leave them hanging without setting up a nurture sequence. Avoid these common mistakes and you’re on your way to an interested audience.
